Family Assessment
Family Assessment (FA) is based
on the belief that parents love their children and
want them to be safe. Sometimes parents need help
to make that happen. Family Assessment can provide
that help.
FA was
created by the
Department of Human Services. The program was set up
based on the belief that
every family has strengths and that they can work
from a strength based perspective. In spite of a
family's strength, families are often reported to
Child Protection (CP). Previously there has always
been an investigation of the family around the
report. Currently, if the reported risk is medium
to low, a family will be offered FA as an
alternative to a traditional investigation.
How Family Assessment Works When FA is an option for the
family, the CP worker does not focus on the details
of the specific incident nor try to prove or
disprove the incident. The focus is on the safety
of the children and the families’ abilities to
address the concerns. Family needs are looked at
and FA is presented as a viable option for them.
St. David's FA is one of 5 five agencies
providing the services to families. We provide
services in the Western and North Western suburbs.
Staff work with the family to provide resources for
whatever the families needs may be. Advocacy and
support are also offered during this 90 day
program. Our Case Managers:
-
ensure the children are
safe
-
avoid negative labels for parents
-
set aside
the issue of fault, work in partnership with the
family
-
help identify family needs
-
provide services
and resources matched to those needs
-
build on
parents’ and communities’ strengths and resources.
