Services for Special Needs

Overnight Respite

Overnight Respite is a unique program that offers parents/primary caregivers a temporary break from the everyday demands of raising a child with special needs. These temporary periods of “respite” are generally 24 to 48 hours at a time and are usually provided on the weekends. Children in this program range in age from early childhood to adult. The children may be diagnosed with developmental disabilities, physical limitations, emotional or behavioral disorders, or a combination of conditions. Each child is matched carefully with a respite provider, and during their respite stays, takes part in the daily activities of the respite family.

Who Provides Respite?

St. David’s Respite Providers are licensed by the State of Minnesota as respite foster care homes. All of our providers undergo an application, home safety check, one-on-one interviews, criminal background checks, and training to become respite providers. Most of our respite providers have experience working with children with special needs, and live throughout the Twin Cities Metro Area.

Qualifications of a Respite Provider

St. David’s invites individuals, couples, and families to explore the rewards of becoming a licensed Respite Provider. All Overnight Respite Providers must meet the qualifications set up by Minnesota statutes which govern Foster Care Licensing. In addition, providers must have an initial 6 hours of training, with another 12 hours completed on a yearly basis; be certified in CPR and First Aid, and must have experience directly related to caring for children or adults with special needs. Additional training may be required for specific children.

How Can I Access Overnight Respite for My Child?
The goals of Overnight Respite services are to reduce the risk of out-of-home placement for the child as well as help alleviate the stress of raising a child with special needs. Overnight Respite gives the child an opportunity to build nurturing relationships with people outside their family unit, and a chance to experience new environments and opportunities. This service can be accessed through Hennepin County, Waivered Services, or through private pay.
