Social Skills Classes
St. David’s offers 10-week classes scheduled in Summer, Fall, Winter and
Spring. Sessions are available for preschool and
school age children. All classes are led by St. David's Speech-Language Pathology staff, and are held at
the Minnetonka site.
Social Skills Classes offer:
• Opportunities for children ages 4 to 12 to increase social
skills such as saying hello and goodbye, starting and maintaining a
conversation, learning about
distance and closeness when talking, basic listening skills,
cooperative play and negotiating conflict.
• A safe environment where students can take advantage of St.
David's
unique facilities to learn and practice social skills.
Speech-Language Social Skills
Provides opportunities for children ages 3-6 to improve social skills such as saying “hello” and “good-bye” and maintaining conversation. Participants will also learn about distance and closeness when talking, basic listening skills, cooperative play and negotiating conflict.
Classes are grouped by age and skill level. The program is specifically designed for children who have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum.
Led by a
Speech Language Pathologist.
Level 1
- Some language delay is acceptable, but s/he must be able to follow directions and speak in 3-4 word sentences.
- Must be able to sit and listen for 5 minutes
- Is not a flight risk
- Familiar with routine of circle-time
- Shows interest in peers
- Must be able to separate from caregiver
Level 2
- Has all prerequisites of Level 1
- Near age-appropriate language
- Has rudimentary knowledge of turn-taking during group activities
